Although jointly worked, the Cwmhesian mines are not a single set of workings, the east and west mines being about 1000 yards apart.
Initially and primarily a lead mine, Cwmheisian East Mine was active in the early 1840s and was the location for A. Dean's discovery of gold in the district. It worked intermittently until the 1890s.
Recorded production (which presumable includes that from the west mine) was 350 tones of gold ore producing 188 ounces of gold, the majority, 176 ounces, being produced before the end of 1864.
