Outcrops of the Huron member of the Ohio Shale along streamcuts North and South of town. The best localities are near cliffs along the West Branch of the Huron River. Pyrite nodules weather directly out of the shale. Other minerals are recovered from large (up to 2 meters or so) septarian concretions which weather out of the shale cliffs and fall into the river bed. Shrinkage cracks in these septaria are mineralized with ferroan Dolomite, Quartz, Calcite, Barite, Whewellite and other minerals. The best Quartz from this locality are Herkimer-like, with high luster and transparency.
