An active Norfolk Southern Railroad cut located at Pine Gap, Franklin Township, Adams County. Pine Gap is an unincorporated village and junction at Ohio Highway 73 and County Road 198 (Portsmouth Road). The rocks exposed at the railroad cut is the Ohio Shale.
Seyfried (1953, p. 121) noted in his master’s thesis dissertation that he found pyrite nodules in the railroad cut a little south of this intersection. Carlson (1991, p. 121) repeated the location given in Seyfried’s earlier work as a “railroad cut along Ohio Routes 73 and 74”.
In 1962, Ohio State Route 74 was relocated between Mount Carmel and Batavia as a four-lane divided highway. The old Ohio State Route 74 became County Road 198 (Portsmouth Road) between Peebles and Pine Gap. In addition to the re-route, the route number itself was later changed to Ohio State Route 32, because the Ohio Department of Transportation felt that it would confuse travelers with Interstate 74, which runs west of Cincinnati. The route numbers were not updated in the second edition of Minerals of Ohio (Carlson, 2015, p. 221).
When Seyfried (1953) visited the locality, the Norfolk and Western had recently made the railroad cut in 1947, as an improvement to its Norfolk to Cincinnati mainline, so exposure was relatively “fresh”. The new line went north of Mineral Springs, then turned west toward Peebles. The Norfolk and Western Railroad merged with the Southern Railroad in 1982 to become Norfolk Southern Railway. The line is still very active and busy (Anonymous, 1948, p. 742).
