A tract of 21 acres and a uranium prospect located in the SE¼ sec. 1, T.17N., R.23E., outside the national monument boundaries and extending along its western boundary. Owned by the New Mexico and Arizona Land Co. (1951), and leased to Frank A. Do Bell of Holbrook.
Uranium-bearing rock forms a lens about 125 feet long, exposed on both sides of a sharp ridge. It has a maximum thickness of about 8 feet but thins rapidly to less than 2 feet. It is a flat-lying, buff-colored sandstone, clay, and conglomerate of the Chinle Formation of late Triassic age which contain abundant carbonized and petrified fossil plant debris. The petrified material, which is commonly in the form of buff-colored tree limbs and trunks, is non-radioactive.
