A former surface placer gold (and PGE ?) mine and deposit area in T2S, R23W, T3S, R24W, and T4S, R24W in the Trigo Mountains and along the Colorado River about 13 miles S of Cibola, approximately 22 miles from Quartzsite. Location given is at the mouth of Black Rock Wash about 15 miles S of Cibola. First produced in 1866 and lastly in 1966. This deposit was originally indicated as a location in N T2N, R21W, but this did not appear likely.
Mineralization is a stream placer deposit with gold-bearing gravels occuring in arroyo bottoms and in ancient bars and channels. Ore concentration was by entrapment by irregularities in stream bed or deposition in low-energy portions of a stream. USGS was unable to find source of PGE data (1989); no mention of Pt in references cited. Most of the Au is flat grains.
For many years, small-scale, intermittent dry washing operations were carried on in this field, but no record of the production exists. Produced intermittently through 1966.
