Mallestiger Mittagskogel Mt., Finkenstein, Karawanken Mts, Carinthia, Austria

(Mallestiger Mittagskogel, Finkenstein, Karawanken, Kärnten, Österreich)

South of Finkenstein, between the mountains Pridou, Kleiner Mittagskogel and Mallestiger Mittagskogel, a number of tetrahedrite deposits are located. From antique times until the early 20th century, these mineralizations were worked intermittently for copper, lead, silver, zinc, iron and antimony ores. The mineralizations are included in palaeozoic (silurian to devonian) limestones, forming layers to a height of about 30 m, which intercalate schist and sandstone layers to a height of 200 m. The whole structure has a height of 750 m (from 550 m to 1300 m above sea level) and extends over a length of 10.5 km. From north to south, six limestone layers are distinguished:

-OBERGREUTH layer, located between the Mallestiger Mittagskogel and Großer Grabanz mountains. It was worked by the mines near Altfinkenstein, NNE of the Mallestiger Mittagskogel (Altfinkenstein-Obergreuth district).
-GRABANZ layer, between Obergreuth and the Feistritzgraben, located west of Kleiner Grabanz mountain. The mines working this layer belong to the Neufinkenstein-Grabanz district.
-TRUPPE layer, located between the rift of Worounitza stream (north slope of Kleiner Mittagskogel mountain) and Pridou mountain.
-ILLITSCH layer, trending from Samonig farm at Mittelgreuth to the ruin of Hoia farm. It was worked near Samonig farm and by a group of mines south of Latschach.
-FINKENSTEIN layer, trending from Altfinkenstein to the ruin of Hoia farm.
-KANZIANI layer, near the foot of the Karawanken Mts.
