Serra da Freita, Arouca, Aveiro District, Portugal

The Serra da Freita/The Freita Mountains is part of the wider mountain range of the Maciço da Gralheira which also includes the Serra da Arada and the Serra do Arestal. Rising at times to an altitude of more than 1000 meters the vast Serra da Freita has much to offer visitors including a small but beautifull waterfall (Frecha da Mizarela) and the Pedras Parideiras/Childbearing Stones: this locality is the only instance in Portugal of a very rare geological penomenon that consists in a granite outcrop which appears to give birth to small stones - incrusted nodules surrounded by a layer of biotite jump off the mother rock as the result of erosion.)
