Open-pit zinc-lead-silver mine 900 kilometres south-east of Darwin, in the north-eastern part of the Northern Territory.
McArthur River is one of the world's largest zinc deposits (35.6 Mt proven and probable).
Owned by Xstrata company.
The mining company had to shift 5.5 kilometers of the flow of the McArthur River from its normal course.
In Australia’s Federal Court temporarily ruled against Xstrata’s plan to expand the McArthur River mine (decision in favour of the Northern Land Council, which represents traditional Aboriginal landowners). This rule was later revoked.
