Antimony mine, Stadtschlaining, Oberwart, Burgenland, Austria

(Antimongrube, Stadtschlaining, Oberwart, Burgenland, Österreich)

Abandoned antimony mine, which was active since the 18th century. Located 2 km N of Stadtschlaining (formerly Schlaining), NE of Oberwart.
Hydrothermal, stibnite-bearing veins of Tertiary age.

Two mining districts are known: the Kurt district (Vinzenz and Mathilde adits; mined since 1893) and the Neustift district (Antoni and Hoffnung adits; W of the 'Tauchental').

The Neustift district was abandoned in 1980, the Kurt district in 1990, and the whole mine was officially closed in 1991.

A mining museum is located in nearby Goberling.

NOTE on the mineral list: Sénarmonite and cervantite appear to only have been found as synthetic crystals from the smelter (Arzruni, 1891; cited in Huber & Huber, 1981). No modern confirmation is available.
