Case Montanini quarry, Sant'Andrea Bagni, Medesano, Parma Province, Emilia-Romagna, Italy

(Cava di Case Montanini, Sant'Andrea Bagni, Medesano, Parma, Emilia-Romagna, Italia)

An active (personal check: Mavris, 2008) quarry set in the "Contignaco tripoli" unit, a sedimentary formation (mostly siliceous marl) enriched with organic origin silica (diatomite).
The marls have been interested by intense gaseous activity (methane) that interacted with amorphous silica and that made possible the crystallization of melanophlogite.
Melanophlogite occurs here mostly as cubes on thin opal CT layers. Pure melanophlogite is quite rare: the geological settings in the place changed and so is very frequent to find pseudomorphs of quartz or opal CT after melanophlogite.
The quarry is exploited by Cementi Rossi SpA for high siliceous cement ("pozzolana").
