Cava di Case Montanini, Sant'Andrea Bagni, Medesano, Parma, Emilia-Romagna, Italia
An active (personal visit: Mavris, 2008) quarry set in the "Contignaco tripoli" unit, a sedimentary formation (mostly siliceous marl) enriched with organic origin silica (diatomite).
The marls interacted with local intense gaseous activity (mostly methane). The precipitating amorphous silica, combined with methane, crystallized as melanophlogite.
Melanophlogite occurs here mostly as cubes on thin opal CT layers. Pure melanophlogite is quite rare: the geological settings in the place changed and so is very frequent to find pseudomorphs of quartz or CT-opal after melanophlogite.
The quarry is exploited by Cementi Rossi SpA for high siliceous cement ("pozzolana").
