Mitterbachgraben, Gansbach, Dunkelsteinerwald, Dunkelsteinerwald, Mostviertel, Niederösterreich, Österreich
Outcrops of peridotites, serpentinized olivin felses, altered serpentinites, garnet clinopyroxenites and pyriclasites (plagioclase eclogites). Moldanubian zone of the Bohemian Massif.
Located along the Mitterbachgraben, a rift that leads from east of Aggsbach Dorf up to a place west of Gurhof castle. A smaller lower part is located within Aggsbach municipality, its larger upper part belongs to the municipality of Dunkelsteinerwald.
Famous for relatively large (albeit often fractured) pyrope grains with kelyphitic rim, embedded in serpentinite.
The rock containing these pyropes has been mined in the 19th century and manufactured into ornamental stones etc.
