Park Valley Mine (Park Mine; Wheal Maria), Okehampton area (Northern Dartmoor), Devon, England, UK

UK Grid Reference: SX713990
Latitude: 50°46'32"N
Longitude: 3°49'32"W
Generally known as Park Valley Mine, but shown as Wheal Maria on the Devon OS map, sheet 66SW.

Lead ore was found here in 1848 whilst quarrying stone, a number of farmers then provided funds to work the lode and, within a few months, 10 tons of ore was raised from an adit driven on lode at a depth of 5 fathoms. However, whilst increasing in value, the lode was found to dip into the adjoining property, whose owner refused permission to work it, and the project was reluctantly abandoned.

A further approach to the adjacent land owner was made in 1878 and, apparently being mellowed by the passing of time, a 21 year lease was obtained and the mine was worked with apparent success, a report later in 1878 recording a homely little concern with rich solid veins of lead ore many inches wide and 4 tons of ore in the adit waiting to be raised.

Note:
In the first edition of Dines (1956), this mine is confused with Wheal Tamar, Callington District. This is corrected in the 1994 reprint.
