Doughboy Mine (Doughboy shaft; Doughboy group), Irene Gulch, Midland City, Globe Hills, Globe Hills District, Globe-Miami District, Gila Co., Arizona, USA

Latitude: 33°26'2"N
Longitude: 110°47'47"W
A former underground Cu-Zn-V-Ag-Mn-Mo mine located in the SE¼ sec. 11 and the NE¼ sec. 14, T1N, R15E, about 1½ miles NE of Midland City, on the west flank of a ridge around which Irene Gulch bends sharply to the south about 1 mile east of the confluence of the gulch and Pinal Creek, about 2 miles N of Globe, on federal land. The Doughboy shaft is located on the ridge in sec. 11. It is 2,000 feet north of the west end of the Irene vein. The Doughboy group consists of 12 claims, including: the Cameron, Exchange, Baltic, Ida May, Little Beauty, Nellie M., Judge, Sunshine, Acre, Dunkirk, and Kentucky. Owned by the Arizona-Colorado Copper Belt Gold Mining and Milling Co. (circa 1901-1913); Doughboy Copper Co. (George Thayer) (1924); Anton T. Rojanovich (1938); the Comstock Extension Mining Co. (Anton T. Rojanovich) (1951), which also owned adjacent Irene group; and by Wright, Sorensen, and Smith (1958). Operated by the Globe-Miami Copper Sulphide Co. (1952). The Dunkirk and Kentucky claims were operated separately in the 1950's as the American Manganese of New Doughboy. Mining ceased in 1913 due to excessive Zn content of the ore.

Mineralization is a vein deposit with linear orebodies hosted in the Dripping Spring Quartzite and the Pioneer Formation of the Apache Group. Several narrow, weakly minmeralized fissures crop out in diabase in the vicinity of the shaft. Ore minerals outcrop SW of the shaft. The mineralization is associated with a Late Cretaceous-Tertiary intrusive period. They strike northeastward and dip 50ºSE. to vertical. An associaetd rock unit is dacite.

Workings include the Doughboy shaft, reported to be 963 feet (293.52 meters) deep, sunk about 1901. A 1,200 foot (365.76 meters) crosscut drift on the 800 level was driven southeastward and found an ore vein. Workings also include 2 exploratory drill holes. The shaft was retimbered to 350 feet in 1951. A 200 foot deep shaft was sunk in 1951 on a manganese vein. Ore containing 2.5-7% Cu was shipped to the Old Dominion smelter but contained too much zinc for economical treatment.
