Gem Mine (Gem shaft; Gem and Boston Mine; Cordova Mine; Lecora Copper Co. property), Buffalo Hill, Old Dominion vein system, Globe, Globe Hills, Globe Hills District, Globe-Miami District, Gila Co., Arizona, USA

Latitude: 33°25'29"N
Longitude: 110°46'41"W
A former underground Cu-Au-Ag-Pb-Zn-Mn mine located on 21 claims (1920) in the NE¼SW¼SE¼ sec. 13, T1N, R15E, on the NE slope of Buffalo Hill, near the summit, 1.2 miles W of Buckeye Mountain, on federal land. Produced 1908-1947. Previous owners include the Globe-Boston Copper Mining Co. (original owners); the Globe Consolidated Copper Co. (1908); Cordova Copper Co. (1909); Lecora Copper Co. (1920); J.W. and G. H. Shields (1927-1929); and, J.R. and R.C. Heron and Sydney Gribble (1940's). Owned and operated by Heron and Gribble (1947).

The Gem shaft is near the top of Buffalo Hill, 1 mile NE of the Old Dominion "A" shaft. Begun by the Globe-Boston Copper Mining Co. and probably was completed by Globe Consolidated Copper Co. about 1909. Globe Consolidated merged with Cordova Copper Co. in May, 1909, and the latter company continued exploration work from the shaft, at least through 1910.

Mineralization is comprised of the Gem and Future veins. They are possibly the eastward continuations of the Buffalo and Josh Billings veins, respectively. Only small orebodies were found. Ore control was a E-trending fault zone. Mineralization is probably associated with Early Tertiary, post-diabase faulting and intrusion period, although the only outcrop of Early Tertiary Schultze Granite is at the Old Dominion Mine to the SW.

Apparently the shaft passed through the Troy quartzite that caps Buffalo Hill, and the deeper workings are entirely in the underlying diabase sill.

Area structures include diabase outcrops NW of a NE-trending fault, Troy Quartzite SE of the fault.

Workings include the Gem shaft, reported to be 1,225 feet deep. Extensive crosscuts on the 1100 & 1200 levels explore the veins. Other shafts include the Mallory (792 feet deep) and the Bird.
