Hutson Zinc mine, Salem, Illinois - Kentucky Fluorspar District, Livingston Co., Kentucky, USA
Located about 3 miles SW of Salem, this mine was the largest zinc producer in Kentucky. The mine headframe and ore tipple are still erect. The mill foundation and some equipment are present. A large sinkhole from the glory hole of smithsonite mining days in the 1920's is also visible. This is private property and can only be visited in the company of the person with mineral rights.
In addition to minerals, this is the best site in the Illinois - Kentucky fluorspar district to find mica peridotite (alnoite) specimens. Two dikes cut through the zinc ore body.
