In 1991-1995 several tons of copal (copalite) (2 M.A. old ?) were found and exploited in several small sites in the rainforest around Sambava and Vohemar. These were first sold at the market as "Madagascar amber". The localities are said to be empty.
Copalite from this area has been erroneously labelled as coming from Northern Madiaomby, which probably refers to the Madiaomby pegmatite.
