A baryte vein and layered deposit with veins 1 to 2 feet (30 to 60 cm) wide and layers 2 inches (5 cm) to 3 feet (90 cm) thick. Hosted in limestone in the Maroon formation of Permian and Pennsylvanian age.
Currently (2009) there is a claim owned by Lark and Dave Harvey who got the claim so the public could dig. There is no fee, but a waiver must be signed at the Bayou Salado Trading Post in Hartsel, and they have a 20 pound limit. They will either take you there, or give directions to it.
