The world's largest iron ore deposit, not yet worked on a significant scale because of its remoteness from industrial centers. Serrania Mutun is a range of hills up to 845m elevation, rising 600m out of a swampy plain, composed of silica-rich Fe oxides, a typical banded iron formation (BIF). The deposit extends across the border into Brazil, where it is called the Serrania de Jacadigo.
