Wellhope Shaft was sunk by the Vieille Montagne Company in 1925 in order to make possible the working of a number of deposits discovered between the wars. The shaft was sunk to a depth of 416ft and entered Nentsberry Haggs Mine (see separate entry in Cumbria) near the intersection of the High Raise and Dupont veins. The ore won at Wellhope was transported by an arial flight to the New Mill at Nenthead
