A former placer Au occurrence/drift mine located in the NW¼ sec. 29, T3N, R14E, MDM, 1.6 km (1.0 mile) SE of Vallecito, along county road E18. 96 acre patented (private) homestead of James A. Redding. Operated intermittently during the period 1933 to 1937. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 100 meters.
Mineralization is a placer Au deposit located on the Columbia, Cataract and a side paleochannels, that are said to traverse this ranch. Local rocks include Tertiary pyroclastic and volcanic mudflow deposits, unit 9 (Cascade Range) and/or Mesozoic granitic rocks, unit 3 (Sierra Nevada, Death Valley area, Northern Mojave Desert and Transverse Ranges).
Workings include underground openings comprised of a 250 foot vertical shaft that passed through a capping of andesite, latite and rhyolitic tuff, but had not reached bedrock. A 50 foot drift E of the 240 level encountered 12 feet of gravel on the W rim of a channel, believed to be a tributary to the Columbia paleochannel. In 1936, the company planned to crosscut the channel, prove the eastern rim, then sink to bedrock.
Pay gravel was said to average $3 to $5 (period values) Au per ton.
