A former silica deposit/mine/pit located in the S½SW¼SE¼ sec. 4, N½NE¼ sec. 9 and in the N½NW¼ sec. 10, T1N, R1E, MDM, 0.3 km (0.2 mile) SW of Somerville (site), on the Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 100 meters.

Friable, white, impure silica sandstone beds strike N70-80W and dip 20-35N. Local rocks include Eocene marine rocks.

Workings include surface openings.

Production data: 326,000 tons of sandstone mined by room and pillar method.

Channel samples analyzed 85.8-89.6% SiO2, 4.4-6.9% Al2O3, and 1.26-1.92% Fe2O3.

About 8,000,000 tons available based on 60-70% extraction. 838,000 tons available to open-pit mining in a bed averaging 36 feet thick with about 20 feet of overburden.
