Brandon Mine, Latrobe, Latrobe District, El Dorado Co., California, USA

Latitude: 38°33'57"N
Longitude: 120°56'3"W
A former Cr-PGE (Pt-Pd-Ir-Rh-Ru) mine located in sec. 12, T8N, R9E, MDM, on the ridge between Hungry Hollow and Indian Creeks, 3 miles E of Latrobe. No mine is shown on topo map; location given is for the PGE sample site location. Opened and closed in 1918. Operated by Mr. Robert D. Domecq, et al, and by the Brandon Brothers during WWI.

Mineralization is a podiform chromite deposit (Deposit Model: 15: Podiform chromite [minor]), hosted in dunite (ultramafic rocks are serpentinized). Ore control was magmatic segregation.

Local structures include shearing. The contact of chromite pods and dunite is sheared.

Tectonic Structures include the Sierra Foothills Accreted Terrane.

Workings included 3 open cuts, 10 to 25 feet long. Production was 4 carloads of ore produced in 1918. This mine has been idle since then and the workings are caved. A small amount of chromite remains in the deepest pit.
