Eg (Eeg), Kristiansand, Vest-Agder, Norway

Eg (Eik; Eig), Kristiansand kommune, Vest-Agder fylke, Norge

Skarn rocks (marble lenses in gneisses) forming reaction rims around small layers of limestone in the Precambrian granitized migmatite of the Kristiansand area. Vesuvianite has been found in this area (around the Eeg gård (Farm)) since before the 1840s in large, 7-10 cm long crystals. The classical locality, which was recognized as exhausted by 1840 (Keilhau 1840), is today underneath a large hospital building complex, but vesuvianite has in newer time been found in the forest west of the hospital.
