Original name: Revir Union, Mežica, Slovenija
The mining district Union received its name after the Union fault system, where the highest density of ore-bodies in the Mežica Mine was discovered in the early 20th Century. The Union district spans from 5th (602 m) down to 19th (268 m) Level. The main mineral interesting for collectors is wulfenite, which abundantly crystallized after ore minerals in vugs and cavities in tectonically shattered limestone. Typical for Union are yellow tabular crystals of wulfenite with translucent orange core. They occur on limestone matrix, or more commonly as loose clusters of intergrown crystals. Wulfenites found in cavities of corroded galena show bipyramidal forms. Only at the deepest levels of the mine transparent form-rich yellow wulfenite crystals occurred. One of the major finds in Union was 15 metres long pocket of wulfenite discovered at the 12th Level by miner Jože Jehart from Črna na Koroškem in 1989. It produced over 10 tons of fine wulfenite specimens. Today most of the mine above the water level at 417 m are still accessible for mineral collecting.
