A former lode Au occurrence/mine located in secs. 2 & 3, T15N, R8E, MDM, about 3.3 km (1.8 miles) SSW of Grass Valley, SE of The Punchbowl, on private (patented) land. The property comprises 13.76 acres. (Foote (1941) groups the Wisconsin/Illinois claim in secs. 2 & 3, totaling 29 acres). MRDS database accuracy for this location is not stated. This mine is part of the Empire West Consolidated group.
Mineralization is a vein deposit hosted in granodiorite. The ore body strikes NW and dips 35SW at a thickness of 0.3 meter. Local rocks include Mesozoic volcanic rocks, unit 2 (Western Sierra Foothills and Western Klamath Mountains).
Workings include underground openings with a length of 365.76 meters and an overall depth of 426.72 meters and comprised of an inclined shaft, drifts, crosscuts & raises.
Production data are found in: MacBoyle (1918), Hobson (1890), and in Johnson(1940).
Production statistics: Year: 1900 (period = 1892 to 1900 (accurate): 16 grams Au/metric ton.
An early estimate by Hobson was $14 (period values) of Au/ton and $75 to $100 (period values) per ton of sulfides. The average Au content in the upper levels was estimated at 1½ ounces Au/ton with concentrates averaging 4½% (of what ?) per ton.
