A Mn-P-Fe-limestone-silica occurrence/prospect located in sec. 33, T21N, R2E, SBM, 6.1 km (3.8 miles) WSW of Shore Line Butte (coordinates of record) (Death Valley), eastern side of the mouth of Wingate Wash, at the northern tip of the Owlshead Mountains (western margin of Death Valley), near the San Bernardino County line, on National Park Service wilderness land (Death Valley National Park/Death Valley Wilderness) (private lease). MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 1,000 meters.
NOTE: One USGS MRDS database file places this locality in San Bernardino County, but only in its title and in the citation of a MAS/MILS file in the San Bernardino sequence.
The group consisted of six unpatented claims (Reward Nos. 1-3, Good Hope Nos. 1-2, and Reward) in T21N, R2E, SBM, Secs. 28 and 33; Reserves were then estimated at about 40,000 tons of ore with a manganese content of 6.18 to 11.1%. Development work consisted only of a few surface cuts, and activity was sporadic. Total production is estimated at around 1,000 tons. [229] As will be noted later, this group underwent several relocations as a lead-silver mine.(Greene, Linda I. (1981): III.A.5.b)(2))
The ore body is 3 meters thick, 15 meters wide and 90 meters long with a depth-to-top of 5 meters. The first ore body is a sedimentary deposit with an irregular form. The second is a shear zone and the third is a replacement type deposit. The primary mode of origin was sedimentation and the secondary mode was residual concentration. Primary ore control was bedding and the secondary was faulting. The type and degree of wallrock alteration are unknown. The strike and dip of the mineralized zone are not included becayuse of the several ore bodies present. Local rocks include Tertiary volcanic flow rocks, unit 16 (Northern Mojave Desert).
Workings include unspecified surface openings/operations.
