Double-A prospect (Double A prospect), Van Horn Peak, Coastal Range, Trinity Co., California, USA

Latitude: 40°12'12"N
Longitude: 123°16'36"W
A former Mn claim/mine located in the center sec. 16, T3S, R8E, HM, 2.7 km (9,000 feet) W of Van Horn Peak (adjusted coordinates for the summit) (located on the W side of Horse Ridge near the head of the first large canyon NW of Barry Creek, a tribuatary of Mad River, about 1 mile NE of Mad River Road.), on National Forest land (located claim). Discoverd 1942. First production was 1944. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 100 meters.

Mineralization is a Mn deposit. The ore body is sedimentary, lenticular and disseminated. It strikes N10W and dips 35W at a thickness of 0.61 meter, and a depth-to-top of 2 meters, a width of 10 meters and a length of 30 meters. The primary mode of origin was sedimentation and the secondary mode was residual concentration. Primary ore control was bedding and secondary was faulting. No wall rock alteration. Mn ore occurs in thin-bedded shaly red chert, striking N to N30W, and dipping 35 to 55E. Ore beds are faulted and folded, so relations and continuity are obscure. Maximum thickness of the ore is 2 feet. The ore is banded mixture of coarse-grained rhodochrosite, hausmannite, manganiferous chert and bementite. Local rocks include rocks of the Franciscan Complex, unit 1 (Coast Ranges).

Workings include unspecified underground openings.

Analytical data results: Average grade is 35% Mn.
