A former lode Au mine located in sec. 23, T9N, R7E, HM (land unsurveyed for township-range. projected), 7.8 km (4.8 miles) WNW of Potato Mountain, in the headwaters area of North Fork Eagle Creek (0.5 mile E of Rock Lake), on Bureau of Land Management/National Forest wilderness land (Trinity Alps Wilderness). First production was 1911. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 100 meters.
Mineralization is hosted in schist and diorite. The ore body strikes NE & E-W and dips 30SE to 80NW to 90 (vertical). Ore emplacement controls included a shear zone on the Redfield claim. The host rock on the Salmon Summit claim was described as fine-grained, black schist (footwall) and diorite (hanging wall). A few feet to the SW of the crosscut, both walls are diorite. Gold occurs in the free state. Local rocks include Mesozoic granitic rocks, unit 5 (Klamath Mountains).
Workings include underground openings. The Redfield claim has a 50 foot adit. The Salmon Summit claim has a 50 foot crosscut with drifts run both ways totaling 300 feet in length, a 70 foot shaft and a 45 foot raise to surface. A 150 foot drift is located on a claim (name = ?) adjoining the Salmon Summit.
Production data are found in: Averill (1941).
Production was recorded from a small claim adjoining the Salmon Summit claim. No other production record was found.
Analytical data results: A picked piece of ore from the Redfield claim said to have assayed $120/ton in gold (period values). Ore from the Salmon Summit claim was said to assay $16/ton in gold (period values), part of which is in the sulfides.
