(Shombole)
Shombole is a strongly eroded, 2 myr-old nephelinite-phonolite-carbonatite volcano on the border between Kenya and Tanzania. It erupted onto the floor of the East African rift, south of present-day Lake Magadi, on the north shore of Lake Natron. Currently, the only mineral specimen of note is of melanite garnet, but deep erosional valleys may penetrate the intrusive core in some areas and there is collecting potential for the intrepid. Eudialyte has been observed in syenite xenoliths in young phonolites.
