Monte Somma, Somma-Vesuvius Complex, Naples Province, Campania, Italy

(Monte Somma, Complesso del Somma-Vesuvio, Napoli, Campania, Italia)

Monte Somma is an igneous, arc-shaped mountain that represents the remnants of an older volcanic cone destroyed in a cataclysmic event in 79 d.c. (when Pompei and Ercolano were destroyed and where Plinius the Old died trying to study the eruption). Mt. Vesuvius is the current cone over the vent. Last eruption 1944.

N.B.: The "guarinite" of Somma-Vesuvius Complex is an epitaxy of hiortdhalite, wohlerite and låvenite (Russo & Punzo, 2004 and references herein).
