Iron Ridge Mines, Iron Ridge District (Neda Iron District), Dodge Co., Wisconsin, USA

The Iron Ridge Mines are located along the Niagria Escarpment within the Iron Ridge/Neda Iron District. The district is located between the towns of Iron Ridge and Mayville, just east along highway 67. During the time the district was active from the 1850's to 1915 four iron mines and one limestone quarry sprung up in the area producing millions of tons of mid to high grade iron ores. The mines that thrived there at the time are listed from south to north. The Iron Ridge Mine aka Neda Mine or Oliver Mine, the Mayville Open Pit Mine, the Mayville Shaft Mine and the Unnamed Mine. An ochre pigment prospect known as the Neda Paint Pit also existed within the district. Even though the mining industry in the area is long dead, the Mayville White Limestone Quarry (Located between the Mayville Open Pit Mine and the Mayville Shaft Mine.) though only quarrying limestone for concrete and construction purposes, the quarry is still as active and bustling as it was when the iron industry was alive and strong.
