Durham, Lewis Co., Missouri, USA

An outcrop of the geode-bearing Mississippian age Keokuk formation. Geodes at this site have been found up to 25 cm in diameter and are usually lined with colorless quartz or chalcedony, with a variety of accessory minerals.

    Description: Found in two geodes which consisted of thick chalcedony shells completely filled with calcite.

    Habit: Rude, often distorted tetrahedral crystals
    Colour: Submetallic black

    Description: Usually one large single crystal, up to 4 cm on edge is found in each geode.

  • Szomolnokite

    Habit: 1 to 2 mm diameter rounded crystals or cavernous elongated bipyramidal crystals
    Colour: bright yellow
    Description: Szomolnokite is known from this locality from one 20 cm diameter geode where it occured in shells of goethite that made up the former surface of 2 to 3 mm oxidized pyrite crystals. Szomolnokite crystals also occured on the surrounding colorless quartz crystals.
