Abercynon (Dowlais Cardiff) Colliery, Abercynon, Rhondda-Cynon-Taff (Mid Glamorgan; Glamorgan), Wales, UK

The last colliery to be sunk in the Cynon Valley and originally known as Dowlais Cardiff Colliery [but sometimes incorectly called either Carnetown or Cilfynydd Colliery], Abercynon was sunk between 1889-96 by the Dowlais Iron Company.

By the turn of the century, ownership passed into the hands of Guest Keen and Nettlefolds Ltd. and in 1930, Welsh Associated Collieries. The latter were then absorbed into the Powell Duffryn Company Ltd. who then owned it until Nationalisation in 1947.

2,502 men were employed here in 1908.

Anercynon was linked to the Lady Windsor Colliery in 1975, both collieries then being worked as a single unit. The colliery closed in 1988.

Heavily overgrown tips remain on Cilfynydd (Craig Evan-Leyshon)Common.

Micro crystals of smithsonite have been reported from a small riverside tip (now removed), which is the first report of this mineral in the coalfield. Other minerals were generally more common on the Cilfynydd Common tip.
