Lyman Viaduct, Dickinson Creek, Salmon River State Forest, Westchester, Colchester, New London Co., Connecticut, USA
Popular gem "pyrope" garnet (really almandine) digging locality, in stream bed just below the Lyman Viaduct. Rounded alluvial garnet crystals up to 1 cm. Cut gems up to 2.5 carets are known.
WARNINGS: Follow rules for collecting in Connecticut state forests. Beware of broken glass in the alluvium. Note that some constituents of the alluvium may be derived from the sand and slag used to fill in the viaduct, and might not be native to the area.
