Gypsum mine, Moosegg (Grubach), Golling, Salzburg, Austria

(Gipsabbau, Moosegg (Grubach), Golling, Salzburg, Österreich)

Large dome of gypsum, resting on a layer of anhydrite, both of which are mined from an open cut since the late 19th century. Host rocks are marls, limestones and dolomites of the Gutenstein formation. The gypsum also includes clays, Werfen slates and altered volcanic rocks. In some places of the deposit, sulphidic mineralizations occur, including a suite of rare lead sulphosalts:

BAUMHAUERITE-SPHALERITE MINERALIZATION with minor dufrénoysite (?), enargite, galena, sulphur, pyrite and seligmannite. Within an area of several square meters on the upper level, this association formed a thin horizon with a height of a few cms. The minerals are believed to have formed from sediments in the surrounding dolomites.
GALENA-SPHALERITE MINERALIZATION with minor sulphur, pyrite and jordanite. These minerals occur either finely dispersed, or as small crystals in veinlets, in contact zones of gypsum and anhydrite.

Located at Moosegg, about 4 km NE of Golling.
