Burma (Myanmar)

Burma (renamed Myanmar in 1989 by the military junta, although this name is not generally used in the US, UK and many other english-speaking parts of the world) is divided into seven divisions and seven states. Generally speaking, states are semi-autonomous areas allocated to particular ethnic groups.

Note: it is currently not allowed to take out any uncut (rough) stones from Burma. For cut stones, a permit is needed.

Description: Gem quality cut stone, allegedly from Mogok, featured in travel article, but there is no firm evidence it really originated there. 10/2009: According to information of different gem dealers the material was initially analysed by the AIGS- and GIT-labs in Bangkok on RI and SG. Fragments were now investigated in Vienna with EDS and by single crystal diffractometry and found to be Poudretteite.
