Probably the best known of the barium deposits of the coalfield, being described as early as 1900.
Two workable deposits were found, the eastern one being worked for barytes between 1904 and 1921 and then re-opened in 1940.
The western deposit came into production in 1938 and most of the subsequent barium mineral production came from this area. Reported production until closure in 1955 was 221,659 tons, of which only a few percent was of witherite.
