The North American Mining Company was organized in 1848. The original mine was opened in 1846 on a fissure vein at the edge of the bluff, southwest of Cliff Mine. During 1846, one large mass was discovered, but no additional masses were found. In 1852, the mining company began moving its operations to work the southern extension of the Cliff Fissure; this would later become the South Cliff Mine. By 1855, all work shifted to the South Cliff operations and the old shafts at the bluff, now abandoned, were known as the "Old North American Mine". In 1860, the property was sold to the Cliff Mine. Total copper production from the original mine site was just under 450,000 pounds. The "old shafts" can be reached for collecting where copper and other minerals common to Cliff should be found.
