Calumet County is underlain by Paleozoic (Ordovician to Silurian) sedimentary rocks that strike NE and dip gently to the east, off the Wisconsin Dome. The rocks include dolostones, quartz sandstone and shale. The Silurian dolostone are particularly resistant and form a prominent cuesta (Niagara Escarpment) in the eastern half of the county, which is well shown in Highcliff State Park. The carbonate rocks in the section are frequently quarried. Glacial till and lake deposits cover much of the county.
