Jackson County is underlain by Cambrian sedimentary rocks, dominantly quartz sandstone, with complex Precambrian rocks exposed along deeper river drainages, particularly the Black River. The Precambrian rocks contain some of the oldest rocks in the state, dating from the Archean. These include gneisses and amphibolites severely deformed by the 1.8 billion year old Penokean Orogeny, a continent - continent collision. These are intruded by various pre- , syn- and post-tectonic granitic rocks. Good places to see these rocks are below the dams at Hatfield and Black River Falls. Archean banded iron formation was exposed at the Jackson County Iron mine from 1969 to 1986. The large open pit and dumps are now part of Wazee Lake County Park. The open pit is now a deep lake popular with scuba divers. Smaller deposits of iron ore were mined sporadically in the area dating back as far back as 1857.
Some of the Cambrian quartz sandstone has potential as "frac sand". Locally wavellite and other phosphate minerals form veins and cement in the sandstone.
Glacial drift cover is relatively thin, and the landscape is dominated by pleasant buttes or "mounds" underlain by Cambrian strata. Outwash gravel from Pleistocene meltwater can yield some interesting rocks from glacial drift such as copper, banded iron formation and "Lake Superior" agates.
