Snarum, Modum, Buskerud, Norge


Snarum is a small community and parish located in Modum municipality in Viken (formerly Buskerud county) and approx. 1.5 miles (2.41 km) from Vikersund. Snarum has its own church. Snarum station is one of the stops on the KrΓΈder line that runs from KrΓΈderen to Vikersund. Snarum is located along county road 280 which goes up to KrΓΈderen before it meets national road 7 which goes up to Hallingdal and to HΓΈnefoss. Snarumselva has good fishing.

Snarum is famous for several occurrences of magnesite and serpentine. The magnesite was mined for the production of fireproof tiles from 1903 on.

The Norsk Magnesitindustri was a major supplier of tiles to many important smelters both in Norway and abroad.

Sadly enough, the history of this factory has been neglected. A comprehensive article about this subject is in preparation (Ronald Werner, 2021).
