French department located center of the "Massif Central", in the southern Auvergne. The Loire River and the Allier River traverse the department from south to north. The eastern part of the department, around Le Puy-en-Velay and Yssingeaux, is called Velay and the western part, around Langeac and Brioude, is called Haut-Allier. The Velay is situated on a huge batholith of an anatectic granite (often covered by phonolitic and/or basaltic flows) but the Haut-Allier is on a metamorphic series (miscellaneous gneisses and amphibolites).
