The Red Jacket shaft was begun in 1889 by Calumet & Hecla as a means of access to the lowest levels of the mine on the north end of the district. The shaft itself is located just northwest of the village of Calumet. No mine piles are present, but by searching around the cement cap one can find copper and rarely powellite.
