Centre of Pb-Zn mining district. Most of the mines were abandoned in the wake of the 1989 revolution.
A mineralogical museum can be visited.

NOTE: Specimen labels with "I.P.E.G mine" or "Ipeg mine" refer to an exploration, mineral extraction and construction company based in Baia Mare, which had dealings with a lot of the mines from the 1960s through the 1990s until the present.
