The Jamestown district is located in Boulder County, Colorado and marks the northeastern end of the Colorado mineral belt. The area is mostly underlain by Precambrian granite and lesser areas of Precambrian gneiss. In the immediate Jamestown area these older rocks are intruded by two Tertiary stocks, the larger composed of granodiorite and the smaller of rhyolite/quartz monzonite porphyry. The smaller stock's outcrop underlies Porphyry Mountain. Mineralization in the district is localized within brittle fractures and breccias and is largely centered on the smaller, porphyry stock.

Vein ore deposits around Jamestown include four types: Pyritic gold, gold telluride, lead-silver and fluorite. The best descriptive work on these ores is Lovering and Goddard (1950). In addition, drilling in the 1970's and early 80's on the southeast flank of the small, porphyry stock indicated porphyry type molybdenum mineralization. However, information about this occurrence, such as Threlkeld (1982), are not easily accessible. Saunders (1991) provides a schematic cross section diagram, Fig. 122.

Interesting rare earth element (REE) mineralization occurs 1 to 2 miles east – northeast of Porphyry Mountain (Goddard and Glass, 1940) . It is roughly coeval with the Precambrian granite that is the most widespread bedrock of the area and has been dated at approximately 1.42 Ga (Allaz, et al, 2015). The REE minerals occur in veins or pods in aplite dikes
