Lake Superior is the largest of the five Great Lakes of North America. The lake is approximately 350 miles long and 160 miles wide at its widest point. Its surface area is 31,700 square miles and the shoreline measures 2,726 miles long. Lake Superior has a maximum depth of 1,333 feet and an average depth of over 400 feet. The Lake occupies the depression formed by the Mid Continent Rift approximately 1.1 billion years ago and glacially carved during the last glacial maximum around 10,000 years ago.
