Volkonskoite from
Kleggåsen Ruby Quarry, Froland, Agder, Norway

Locality type:Quarry
Classification
Species:Volkonskoite
Formula:Ca0.3(Cr,Mg,Fe)2((Si,Al)4O10)(OH)2 · 4H2O
Comments:Found at the locality in a small body of strong hydrothermal alteration as a thin green crust around altered corundum crystals.

Nilssen & Raade (1973) found 1.5% Cr2O3 in this clay mineral, and identified it as volkonskoite based on the powder x-ray diffraction pattern. This is obviously too little Cr to qualify as volkonskoite, which requires Cr as a site dominant ion. See Foord et al. (1987) for discussion.
Colour:green
