The site is a National Natural Landmark (NNL) and is closed to collecting. It is jointly managed by the National Park Service and the Oglala Sioux Tribe. Sometimes listed under the old county name of Washabaugh.

Note: Washington Co. merged into Jackson Co. 1943. Washabaugh Co. merged into Jackson Co. in 1983.

Rattlesnake Butte previously appears to have been called Devil's Hill and Snake Butte.
