Mineralizations in metasomatites in the contact zone between Yanshanian granites and Triassic carbonate country rocks or in the carbonates adjacent to the contact zone. There exist six ore-bearing metasomatic formations in the Gejiu mining district, namely
1) calcic skarn formation, on which Sn, Cu and W (S, As, Bi and Fe) mineralization is superimposed
2) magnesian skarn formation, on which the same mineralization is superimposed as on the calcic skarn formation
3) alkali-metasomatites, associated with W, Sn and Be mineralizations
4) greisen formation, associated with Sn and W (B, Li, Nb, Ta) mineralizations
5) fluorine-boron-metasomatite formation, associated with Sn and W (Be and Li) mineralizations
6) carbonate-fluorite-quartz-metasomatite formation, associated with Sn, W and polymetallic mineralizations
Each metasomatic formation contains particular metasomatic facies (metasomatic mineral associations). All formations occur in different geological settings, but they are closely related with each other in origin, time and space, showing various distinct zones, and may constitute a special metasomatic series. Tin mineralization is chiefly related to the evolution of post-magmatic metasomatism. During magmatic crystallization, tin exists mainly in biotite, probably in the isomorphous form. Occasionally, fine-grained cassiterite may be found as an accessory mineral in biotite. In the skarn stage, most of the tin is concentrated in the garnet, forming Sn-bearing andradite. The inferred indium reserve in the Gejiu Sn deposit is over 4000 t.
These deposits are accompanied by over 20 types of non-ferrous, rare, and precious metal ores such as W, Be, Ag, In, and Bi. Tectonically, the Gejiu Sn-polymetallic ore district is situated at the junction of the Yangtze Craton, the Cathaysia, and Indochina blocks. The Gejiu ore district is divided into the eastern and the western parts by the NS trending Gejiu fault.
The Gejiu mining area is the world's largest tin ore field. The earliest mining history dates back to the Spring and Autumn Period (770 to 476 BCE), and large-scale mining activity started in the last century. This deposit has a total reserve of βΌ4.0 kt In with an average grade of 207 ppm and contains 3.3 Mt Sn, 3.3 Mt Cu, 4.3 Mt Pb + Zn, and 0.15 Mt WO3
