Mines de Batère, Corsavy, Arles sur Tech, Pyrénées-Orientales, Languedoc-Roussillon, France

"West of Céret on the N618, pass Arles-sur-Tech where the D43 will lead to the Batère iron mine." [Belot, 1978]

Old Fe mines.

In fact, there have been several iron ore mines around the Mont Canigou (mines de Batère et des Indis, de la Pinouse etc. at 1000 m and more of elevation).

The ore arrived in the railway station of Arles-sur-Tech and then was despatched either by railway or by ship (Argeles on the Mediterranean) to be processed.

The last mines closed in the 1980s after many decades of working.

Several old postcards show various aspects of mining in the first decades of the 20th century.
